Agar is a gelatinous substance obtained from seaweed. When mixed with water, heated, and allowed to cool, ‘agar agar’ forms a solid gel which is used as a growth medium to make agar petri dishes.

Agar itself is non-nutritive and is typically mixed with various nutrient bases and optional additives to provide food for the mushroom mycelium, thus ensuring optimal growth.

If you are interested in mycology and want to further your skills, you must get used to using agar. It is the best way to make clean cultures, analyse mycelial growth, make transfers, and ensure you have clean spawn.

All agars and additives listed are premium grade and are the same ones we use in our own lab so you can be assured of their quality and freshness. Don’t settle for old stocks and cheaper quality alternatives.

Pure lab grade Agar Agar. High gel strength.

Malt Extract (ME)

Our premium Malt Extract is made from malted barley and used as a nutritional additive to agar formulas to promote strong mycelial growth.

Light Malt Extract (LME)

Lighter in colour than our traditional Malt Extract. Our premium Light Malt Extract is also made from malted barley and used as a nutritional additive to agar mixes.

It’s personal preference as to which one you use, we use them both depending on what culture we’re analysing.

Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) – PRE-MIX

A pre-mixed blend of the classic potato dextrose agar. Used extensively by cultivators around the world. An excellent formula for all mushroom species. When set, PDA is light in colour.

Soy Peptone (SP)

Our premium, lab grade Soy Peptone is used as a nutrient, vitamin and protein additive to agar. A non-GMO product that provides a full nutrient spectrum to your agar mixes. Lab grade and suitable for use in mycology, microbiology and fermentation.

Soy Peptone Yeast Extract Agar (SPYEA) – PRE-MIX

The king of agar mixes, our own in-house formula which we use extensively in our lab. A mix of premium ingredients including agar, soy peptone and yeast extract which provides an optimal and balanced agar blend resulting in the the perfect substrate for any type of mushroom culture.

Dextrose

Dextrose is a simple sugar/monosaccharide derived from corn and is chemically identical to glucose. Dextrose is used as a simple nutrient additive in agar formulas to support strong mycelial growth.

Storage

Store all Agar and Agar Additives in a cool dark place away from heat and direct sunlight.
