Hardwood Briquettes / RUF Blocks

EcoBlaze RUF Briquettes, known also as Heat Logs, Heat Blocks or Simply RUF blocks. Traditionally used as fuel source in wood-burners, substituting seasoned logs. They are made from compressed, untreated, clean, organic hardwood chips and shavings, a by-product from the furniture industry.

We use RUF oak briquettes as part of our substrate mix to grow many wood-loving mushroom varieties. They are used in combination with hardwood sawdust and other supplements to provide the perfect substrate composition for mycelial growth.

Sawdust alone can compact easily and limit air-exchange for the mycelium. This often results in poor colonisation speeds, increased contamination, uncolonised areas and smaller yields. Once soaked for 12-24 hours, these pure RUF hardwood blocks naturally swell and break up, and can be added to any substrate to improve overall mix consistency.

We add 20% RUF oak blocks to our substrate mix when we make our mushroom blocks, but found that anywhere from 10%-30% addition is a good place to start.

  • Increases substrate aeration, for increased air exchange and colonisation time
  • Provides a larger particle size than sawdust alone for the mycelium to use as a nutrient island
  • Easy to soak, after which can be mixed in with dry ingredients prior to bagging
  • Reduced contamination rates
  • <12% Moisture Content

If you have a wood burner, you can also use RUF blocks as a fuel source, which we do during the winter months and cold evenings. We also use the resulting ash to pasteurise our straw logs when growing our oyster mushrooms – Nothing goes to waste!

Each pack contains 12 RUF Briquettes @ 10kg per pack.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

  1. Sven

leave them to soak overnight then add them to your substrate mix. Make sure your water content levels are correct for your substrate choice. I found that they hydrate to around 58% when soaked in cold water overnight and allowed to drain if that helps anyone out there… Peace out

  3. Cristina Falco

Break up easily when soaked in water for a couple of hours, overnight soak fully hydrates the wood chips. Leave to drain for a few hours before bagging and steralising. Does make for a good substrate mix. Was also sent a couple of sample products to try thanks+
