Layflat Bag (Poly-Tubing)

Polythene lay-flat bags, often referred to as poly-tubing, play a crucial role in the mushroom industry, particularly in creating straw substrate columns. These bags are fully transparent, allowing for easy monitoring of mycelial growth. They’re robust enough to hang from structures with minimal stretching and can double as humidity tents for smaller home mushroom cultivation.

Our polythene lay-flat bags come in three different diameters, all crafted from high-quality 500-gauge polythene, twice as thick as the more common 250-gauge options. The sizes indicated are the width of the lay-flat bags when flat, helping you determine the appropriate size for mushroom growing on straw columns.

• A 12-inch lay-flat bag is 7.6-inch in diameter.
• A 16-inch lay-flat bag is 10.2-inch in diameter.
• A 20-inch lay-flat bag is 12.7-inch in diameter.

It’s crucial to note that columns exceeding a 13-inch diameter may suffer from overheating and poor air exchange at the core. This can lead to anaerobic conditions that encourage bacterial growth and reduce yield.

For our operations, the 20-inch lay-flat bags have proven ideal. While larger diameters are easier to fill, they also become heavier; a 1-metre, 12.7-inch column of wet straw can weigh up to 24 kg.

Orders vary by size: larger quantities are supplied on a roll, a more convenient and space-saving option for commercial growers, while smaller ones come folded, which is more practical for home cultivators and smaller operations.
